Around the Sea of Galilee

Galilee Map

The Sea of Galilee area

There are many places of significance around the Sea of Galilee. Much of Jesus’ ministry took place in this area. Beginning at the bottom of the map and going clockwise:

Yardenit – This is a location on the Jordan River where we will stop and people can be baptized or remember their baptism.

Royal Plaza Hotel – This (the red star) is the hotel where we will likely be staying during our time in this area. It is possible we will stay somewhere else, but I have stayed here in all my previous tours with EO.

Tiberias – This city is located on the west shore of the Sea of Galilee.

Arbel – This is a mount with a cliff overlooking the Sea of Galilee. It is one of the my landmarks when on the Sea of Galilee. The ‘Valley of the Wind’ is just to the north of Arbel.

Ginosar – This is where a 2,000 year old fishing boat was found in the mud back in 1986. The long drought had lowered the water level in the sea to the point the boat was discovered and preserved.

The Bread and Fish Church – This is the location of the miracle of the multiplication of the fish and loves when Jesus fed the 5,000. This is the only miracle of Jesus recorded in all four gospels (John 6:1-15).

Mensa Domini Church – (Sorry, there is no marker for this.) This is on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, and within a few hundred yards of the Bread and Fish Church. It is traditionally thought to be the place where Jesus cooked breakfast for His disciples after the resurrection and restored Peter (John 21).

The Church of the Beatitudes – This church was built on the mount where the Sermon on the Mount is thought to have been preached (Matthew 5-7). It is another landmark visible from the Sea of Galilee.

Chorazim – This is one of the cities about which Jesus spoke because they had not repented, even though they had witnessed Jesus’ miracles (Matthew 11:20-24).

Capernaum – This is the town where Jesus stayed for much of his ministry when in the area of the Sea of Galilee.

Greek Orthodox Monastery – (Sorry, there is no marker for this.) This is a landmark just to the east of Capernaum. The red roofs make this landmark prominent.

Ein Gev – This is one of the places where we might eat lunch. ‘St. Peter’s fish’ from the Sea of Galilee is on the menu.
